What's the difference between a habit and a suffocating pattern? Can the same breath be both beautiful and unbearable? This issue, STATIC QUO, aims to sit in that paradox without resolving it.
Our team has been scattered across time zones these past months—pulled between schedules, geographies, and the constant momentum of early college. But through that displacement, we became hyperaware of consistency; the patterns we hold and that hold us despite everything.
We've collected work from creators who look into the static. Some find something beautiful there—the meditation of painting the same scene over and over or the unexpected grace in staying consistent despite everything changing. Others find something horrifying: the relationships that loop without moving forward, the work cycles that grind us down, the generational trauma that repeats itself like an earworm, the dreams that haunt us. All asking: what are we supposed to do when nothing moves, or when everything moves too fast, or when we're too caught up to tell the difference?
If you've ever felt trapped by your own patterns, found comfort in repetition, feared what happens when the routine breaks, or if you carry cycles you didn't choose, there's something here for you. We invite you to embrace the white noise with us. To find horror in it, or beauty, or both. To see what happens when we stop running from stillness and actually look.
“Muscles aching to work, minds aching to create - this is man.”
― John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath
