A STATEMENT FROM THE ARTIST

Emily C.

Inspired by Monet's Water Lilies, I wanted to depict the view from my dorm room window at different times of the day. In the spirit of plein air (though I was working indoors), I decided to complete each illustration in one sitting, without taking any reference photos. This created a unique challenge where I was racing against the dimming light of day. For the first artwork (leftmost), I drew until the magical blue hour slipped into total darkness, when I could barely see the tree in front of me. With each iteration of the scene, I found myself getting faster at sketching and more knowledgable of the little details that characterize the space. I'm quite proud of the final product, and these three drawings will act as mememtos of my first college dorm room as I move to a different space for sophomore year.
