ILLUSTRATION
by Daniel L

In this world, when children pass away or die tragically, as an act of “mercy” for their early death they are forced to live on as joyful spirits. Fragments of their past life are carried with them into this posthumous one. They start as masked humans, but as time passes they become more assimilated with the forest, becoming less and less human…

This character was inspired by the concept of innocence and the artist Aurora. I wanted to evoke a Nordic medieval forest kinda vibe, with hints at intricate floral patterns. Overall, I wanted this character to feel performative and mysterious. That's why I chose to adopt this bunad-style dress with sleeves that flare out. Additionally, this character has a turnkey on its back – similar to a ballerina box — to symbolize how her parents would force her to perform even if it was against her will. That’s also why there’s marionette strings connecting to the limbs. The final detail is the mask – the lamb mask is significant to further the idea of "innocence".
