A Confucian City in the Dark
ILLUSTRATION

A STATEMENT FROM THE ARTIST
DANIEL L
The piece is a concept of a city inspired by Confucian ideology, with a tiered structure symbolising hierarchical relationships and an overall design inspired by the Confucian wooden clapper bell. Additionally, I utilise the broken towers to represent the conflict between the 3 Chinese ideologies: Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism. Integrating the vibrant reds and yellows of Chinese culture, I highlight the lively nightlife, emphasising its vibrancy against the surrounding darkness. Without the darkness, the vibrancy and life to the city would have been lessened. For only in the darkness can the brightest light be found.
